Analysts in the Latent Comparison Section of the Identification Bureau perform fingerprint comparisons and conduct footwear and tire track examinations. Latent prints from crime scenes are compared to crime suspects and of victims of crimes. Analysts conduct manual comparisons as well as use an automated identification system to search prints. The local automated system contains a data base of over one million sets of known fingerprints and prints can also be searched in the state Department of Justice data base, other data bases in the state and surrounding states. Prints are also searched in the FBI's automated system which is a national data base containing millions of fingerprints.
