The Evidence Control Unit (ECU) is responsible for receiving, logging,
moving, tracking, and releasing all evidence for the Forensic Science
Services Division. The unit is staffed by four Correctional Services
Technicians.
All outside agencies submit evidence directly to ECU by appointment.
Sheriff’s evidence is transferred to Forensic Science Services from the
Property/Evidence Bureau.
Blood and urine samples are submitted by depositing the samples in locked
refrigerators in the evidence receiving area. To gain access to the
receiving area, use the access code or the telephone in the alley on the
west side of the Brad Gates Forensic Science Building.
Blood and urine samples submitted for alcohol and other Toxicology tests are
routinely analyzed without a formal work request.
Controlled substance and document cases may be submitted to ECU with an
attached work request form without prior approval for analysis. Syringe cases
require prior approval before submission. Syringes must be safely packaged
in safety tubes.
Evidence intended for analysis by the Identification Bureau or the Firearms,
Trace, or DNA unit of the Criminalistics Bureau should not be submitted
without prior notification. This is accomplished by submitting the work
request to the appropriate supervisor for review (usually by FAX).
The Evidence Control Unit general phone is (714) 834-6414.
